I'm reading Morrison's Seven Soldiers of Victory.
Pretty trippy ****. Though not as trippy as The Filth or some of his other work. I like it.

Alright, I'm going to bend the rules. Just a little bit. I'm reading the Count of Monte Cristo. For the 4th time. Why did I put a piece of classical French literature in the MFComics forum? Because tCoMC was a foundational novel for many comics today. It was one of the first major stories where our hero loses everything, then somehow gains immense wealth and power and uses it to take his vengeance out on the people who wronged him. I read a commentary that linked Batman and The Crow to this book. Basically a young guy with everything going for him gets falsely imprisoned for being a traitor by his friends who envy him. This comes as a surprise to him, because he believes in the idea of 'providence' - good is eventually rewarded and evil punished by God. Karma, basically. While he's in prison he learns languages, sciences, math etc from another prisoner and learns of a fortune of billions hidden on a nearby island. He escapes, takes the fortune, and decides that Providence has failed - that it's now his job to be the hand of God and reward those who had blessed him and punish his former friends. But instead of just killing them, he decides to use his fortune to absolutely ruin them in a way that's unique to each individual. It's an absolutely massive read and drags in some parts (though they make an abridged version), but I highly recommend it if you're ever in the mood for a classic read with a comic book feel "And now, farewell, kindness, humanity and gratitude. Farewell to all the feelings that expand the heart. I have been Heaven's substitute to recompense the good; now the God of Vengeance yields to me His power to punish the wicked!".

Great post and great points.

I vaguely remember Secret Wars, BTW. I wasn't so much into comics at the time but definitely remember the action figures. Are the comics any good? From what I've read about the whole idea, it was an attempt to compete with DC, which was beginning to see success in the toy-market at the time. It makes me hesitant to check them out, as the whole thing feels more like a marketing strategy.

I think I will go look around my parents place soon for my comics. Reading X-men: Fatal Attraction sound good right now, so does Deadpool.

I love the comic and toy series...the books are really good, and feature the first appearance of the alien symbiote black Spidey costume.
